The Finance Ministry of Russia has declared that cryptocurrencies are too risky for the majority of Russians. However, they acknowledged that tokens could be suitable for professional investors, according to Ivan Chebeskov, the director of the ministry's financial policy department.

Chebeskov emphasized that most Russians should not view cryptocurrencies as a form of savings, labeling them as high-risk financial instruments. Despite this, the ministry did not propose a ban on crypto or advise all Russians to avoid tokens. Instead, Chebeskov stated that coins were only appropriate for citizens who already invest in assets like securities and real estate, although caution should still be exercised.

The Russian Finance Ministry's stance on crypto has raised eyebrows, as Chebeskov acknowledged that there is still a certain level of risk involved for crypto investors. He highlighted that the volatility of cryptocurrencies can reach staggering levels of 100-200%. These comments sharply contrast with recent statements from the Central Bank, whose fintech chief Kirill Pronin warned that investing in cryptocurrencies could lead to sanctions.

The Central Bank has already blocked over 800 crypto wallets associated with individuals based in Russia. The debate on crypto regulation in Russia has been ongoing for several years, with the Central Bank pushing for a ban while the Finance Ministry supports regulation and taxation of tokens. Notably, the ministry is particularly interested in allowing crypto miners to operate within the country.

Russia's pursuit of de-dollarizing its economy might lead it to explore cryptocurrencies as a temporary solution amidst ongoing international sanctions. Lawmakers have been considering various options, including the idea of launching a state-run crypto exchange to facilitate business for domestic firms abroad. However, top politicians recently distanced themselves from this plan, suggesting that overseas exchanges could be a more favorable choice for trade firms.
